With qualifiers in 10 events, the St. Joseph’s Academy track and field team scored 53 points to finish fourth in the Class 5A Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held May 6 at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track & Field Complex.

C.E. Byrd scored 74 points to capture the crown. Just two points separated the Redstickers from state runner-up Zachary (55). Baton Rouge High finished third with 54 points. There were 43 teams in this year’s field.

Senior Gabbi Chauvin, a University of Louisiana Lafayette signee, won both the 800 meter and 1,600 meter runs. She set a school record in the 800.

Sophomore Lauren Hendry is the state champion in the 3200 meter run.

“The team competed with confidence and intensity,” coach Charlie Daigle said. “Everyone gave it everything they had mentally and physically. We came up two points short of accomplishing our goal of getting into the top two for the first time in school history. While that was disappointing, I am very happy with the effort.”

Scoring points towards the team’s total were the following:

1600m Run: Gabriella Chauvin, 1st place, 5:12.33; Lauren Hendry, 6th place, 5:31.88

800m Run: Gabriella Chauvin, 1st place, 2:14.73; Taylor Winters, 5th place, 2:23.03

3200m Run: Lauren Hendry, 1st place, 11:21.88

4x400m Relay: Taylor Winters, Kelly Stephens, Leanne Livingston and Gabriella Chauvin, 5th place, 4:04.00
