The defending state champion St. Joseph’s Academy cross country team continued its preparation for the 2017 season with a four-day summer camp at Lake Rosemond in St. Francisville.

Between July 27 and 30, the runners trained and participated in team-building activities, including team challenges, long runs, goal-setting sessions, focused team conversations, a Mini-Murph, speed minton in costumes, ultimate ball tournament, swims in Lake Rosemond and an entertaining karaoke competition. The runners also took a field trip to the Tunica Hills to hike the waterfalls.

The team elected Team Council members for the 2017 season. They are Jennifer Bennett, Lauren Hendry, Leanne Livingston, Virginia Dirks and Kate Richie.

Head coach Mark LaHaye spoke to the runners about the team mantra for the year: Trust. Stressed throughout the summer camp were the themes of positivity, being a great teammate and having a team first mentality.

Sophomore Isabelle Brown said the week-long camp was a wonderful experience. “We played many competitive games, ran to our greatest abilities and did team-bonding activities,” she said. “I enjoyed learning from and about my teammates and building a trust with my coaches and team that will hopefully bring us another state trophy.”

Freshman Kate Ritchie said she especially enjoyed the wide range of activities during the summer camp. “In the mornings, we would get up and go on a long run on beautiful country roads and trails,” she said. “At lunch or in the afternoon, we would do team-bonding games that were so much fun. At different times of the day, Coach Mark would give us amazing, motivational talks that were very moving and got us very excited for the upcoming season. I’m looking forward to getting to know the team even better, competing in my first high school meets and achieving our number one team goal, which is to win state.”

Sophomore Virginia Dirks was equally enthusiastic. “We bonded over runs, team games and spending time together,” she said. “We grew and got closer together as a team and learned to trust each other. I cannot wait for the season to begin because I have such high hopes for the team.”
