St. Joseph’s Academy faculty members returned to campus August 4 and 7 for two days of professional development and planning for the 2017-2018 academic year. New faculty members gathered on August 3 for a day of orientation.

Principal Dr. Michele Lambert led the two-day faculty/staff orientation, beginning with a prayer and welcome and a discussion of this year’s charism theme of Relationships: Sacred Threads that Connect. She offered her vision for the upcoming year, and Dean of Academics Dr. Jason Hanks outlined a number of academic issues.

Faculty and staff members celebrating milestone anniversaries this year were introduced. Celebrating five years are Erin Albarado, Erika Angarita, Fran Barbera, Kristine Davis, Cindy Downs, Jen Fontaine, Lisa Knotts, Kenny Martin, MJ Supan, Marie Vukovics, Linda Weimer and Brianna Sommers. Celebrating 10 years are Stephen Barrios, Leigh Grace Rouyer, Donald Spann and Emily Peavy. Fifteen-year employees are Brad Buras and Aimee Cronan. Liz Fontenot is celebrating 20 years, and Arthur Smith marks 30 years.

Lunch was provided by the SJA Mothers’ Club. Chair of the Welcome-Back Luncheon Committee was Bridget Akin.

Following lunch, President Jan Rhorer Breen presented an overview of the Strategic Plan, which continues to guide the work of the Academy, and detailed the enhancements which occurred on campus during the summer months. She provided an update on the construction of the Academy Student Center, which is on schedule to open in late spring of 2018. She also reminded faculty and staff of the year-long celebration of the 150th anniversary of SJA’s founding in 1868. The festivities are set to kick off in August of 2018.

Also providing updates on the work of their respective departments were Admissions Director Mandy Hoffman, Mission Advancement Director Meg Gerald, Alumnae Director Katie Jeter, Finance Director Laurel Herrington, Business Manager Mary Pat Broussard and Human Resources Director Colleen Bryant. The day ended with faculty members spending time in their departments.

Day two began in prayer, followed by a technology update by John Richardson and Francisco Nieto. Harold Suire discussed SJA’s ongoing use of STEP/Emergenetics, which provides insight into an individual’s unique methods of learning. Dean of Women Stacia Andricain led a discussion about millennials and what that means in the context of today’s student body. She also discussed SJA’s disciplinary policy.

Following lunch provided by SAGE Dining Services, faculty members spent time in their departments.

Freshmen and half of the sophomore class will be on campus for student orientation on August 8. The remaining sophomores and all juniors and seniors will have their orientation on August 9. Classes begin August 10.
